About the assassins

Early picture of the Muay Thai Boxing Gym
You have reached the home of the Assassins Fighting Team. They were originally the Assassins Muay Thai Boxing gym and opened their doors in 1991. Chief instructor Mark Barlow started training a few of his friends, six in all. After several months he decided to invite more people to train. They held their first promotion in November 1992 at Melton Mowbray's Working Men's Club. Following the success of this event, the gym went from strength to strength building a good reputation for having solid Thai Boxers. Always in search of more knowledge and experience Mark decided to build on his knowledge of Muay Thai and travelled to Thailand in 1993, having also travelled there every year since. The assassins gym has produced many champions ranging from Junior Midland Champions to Adult World Champions. Students have also won World Titles in Thailand and regularly fight there. To date the Assassins fighting Team have five gyms in the Leicestershire area covering Melton, Oakham, Syston, Coalville and Leicester. There may also be plans to open more gyms in the future, watch this space!

  - "I first got into Muay Thai back in 1994 at the age of 24, I had done the kung fu and judo bit like a lot of my generation, then I heard of a gym that had opened up near where I live in Leicester, called, The Champions Gym, ran by Maxine Adams, they did this thing called Muay Thai, I went, I tried it, I was hooked.
I had a couple of fights, then on and off until 2004 when I joined the Assassins. I became an instructor in 2005, mainly teaching the juniors and assisting at the fighter's classes.
I attended a Tony Myers Referee and Judge course, and in 2007 I gained a C-class qualification as a Referee and Judge, I started Refereeing C-class shows and interclub's and attending more courses, then in 2008 I became a B-class Referee and Judge, a lot more shows and courses, and in 2010 I gained an A-class Referee and Judge qualification. I am still in the gym 4 times a week, 2 of those days training myself, I am away at shows and interclub's a couple of times a month, I really enjoy it, it's the next best thing to fighting for me, I hope to keep doing this for the foreseeable future. I have six kids, and 2 grandchildren, 3 of whom train and fight for the Assassins, 2 of the others will when they are old enough".

  - "I've had 16 fights and have become the Midland and English Champion and am now teaching at the Oakham gym for the Assassins."

Bruce PerksBruce Perks, Assassins Instructor, Woodgate, Leicester.
  - "I have been training for 11 years, the last 5 years with Mark Barlow. I've had 1 fight but it wasn't for me. Mark has encouraged me to become an instructor and after 6 hard years I finally became one. I live in Leicester with my girlfriend and baby."

  - "I joined the Assassins in 2007 aged 11, I had never done any type of martial art before, so it was all brand new to me, skipping, sit ups, punching and kicking pads, I found it very awkward at first, tripping over my own feet, but the instructors and other kids soon made me feel at home, and after time every thing fell into place, and now classes are fun and natural to me, and the footwork and coordination I learn in class has helped me out in school with football and rugby, and the training has taught me that with time, dedication, determination and the right mental attitude, you can achieve your goals, in the gym, on the sports field, in the class room, and in life".

Retired Assassins Fighters

Over the years the assassins have groomed some fine talent. These fighters who no longer compete with the assassins often do maintain contact with the club and may devote many hours of their time in an advisory or supportive role.
